Privacy

Nowpane is built to need as little about you as possible. There are no accounts, no cookies, no ads and no third-party trackers.
Your location
- Sharing your location is optional. If you decline, you can type a town or ZIP code. That lookup happens on your device, using US Census Bureau place lists that the app downloads.
- Your precise location never leaves your device. Before anything is requested, the app rounds it to a grid cell about 5 km (3 miles) across. Only that rounded cell is sent to our server.
- Our server does not record the cells it receives. It does not log requests, and it does not save locations to any database or analytics.
- The app remembers your last place (the rounded cell and the town name you picked) in your browser's local storage so it opens straight to it. Forget my place deletes it.
What other services receive
Our server fetches the data for you, so the services below see our server's address and the rounded cell, never your IP address or exact location:
- National Weather Service (api.weather.gov): the rounded cell, for forecasts and alerts.
- Michigan Department of Transportation: an area of about 20 km around the rounded cell, for lane and road closures.
- Public library event feeds (Traverse Area District Library, Grand Rapids Public Library, Kent District Library, Capital Area District Libraries): a plain request for their public calendar. No location is sent.
Opening hours come from an OpenStreetMap copy bundled with the app, so no outside service is asked about them. When you follow a link to a source (for example an event page), that site's own privacy policy applies.
Usage counting
To learn whether people come back, the app keeps two values on your device: the week you first opened it and the day you last opened it. Once a day it sends one anonymous message with only these broad categories:
- new or returning visitor
- time since the last visit (same day, 1–7 days, 8–30 days, or more)
- whether the app is installed
- which showcase town it was (Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Lansing, or other)
- which cards had fresh data
It contains no identifier, no location and no IP address, and it cannot be linked to you. It is not sent if your browser has Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track turned on, or if you switch off Send an anonymous daily usage count at the bottom of the main screen.
Hosting
Nowpane is hosted on Cloudflare. As with any website, Cloudflare processes network information such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the service. We do not receive logs of those requests.
Offline storage
To work offline, your browser keeps a copy of the app and the last data it showed you. This stays on your device. Clearing your browser's site data removes it.
Children
Nowpane collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
